The National Institute of Standards and Technology's AI Risk Management Framework (NIST AI RMF 1.0) was introduced to assist organizations in managing the unique challenges AI systems pose. The framework has been divided into two parts. Part I helps organizations frame risks related to AI and describes the intended audience, whereas part II comprises the “core” of the framework. This part defines four distinct functions to help organizations address AI system risks. These functions—govern, map, measure, and manage—are further divided into categories and subcategories that ensure AI's overall responsible and ethical use. For risk management to be effective, organizations must establish and maintain appropriate accountability mechanisms, roles and responsibilities, culture, and incentive structures.

Risk Assessment

Organizations must identify and evaluate potential risks that may arise from developing and deploying AI technologies. This involves conducting risk assessments to assess the probability and consequence of evolving risks and ensuring they do not impact an organization and its strategic goals.

Risk Governance

Organizations must establish a governance framework to monitor AI risk management practices. This includes establishing accountability mechanisms, duties, and policies to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI systems.

Control Activities

Organizations must adopt control measures to mitigate identified risks. These measures include technical safeguards, such as rigorous protocols for testing and validating artificial intelligence, administrative measures, staff training, and compliance oversight.

Communication

Organizations must ensure transparency about AI risks, evolving management practices, roles and responsibilities, and communication lines related to mapping, measuring, and managing AI risks are documented and effectively communicated within the organization and to external stakeholders.

Monitoring Activities

Organizations must continuously monitor AI systems and the risk environment to identify changes or deviations from expected outcomes. This includes regular reviews of the risk management process and adaptation of strategies as necessary to address emerging risks and regulatory requirements.

Conduct Training

Provide adequate and up-to-date training to employees to understand AI risks and their roles in the AI risk management process. Assign accountability where needed.
