What is Secure Socket Layer (SSL)?

Secure socket layer (SSL) is a cryptographic protocol used primarily to secure communications over the internet. It establishes an encrypted connection between the client and server, thus allowing for secure data transmission. However, the protocol has become obsolete, replaced by the newer and more secure Transport Layer Security (TLS).
